When Upton Close presented his wife, Margaret Fretter Nye, with a Palm Beach, Florida, mansion for her birthday in 1954, the exuberant home, with its candlelike pillars and icing-esque stucco walls, took on a rather fitting moniker: the Birthday Cake Castle. This year, it serves as the venue for the 39th American Red Cross Designers’ Show House—welcoming 20 designers to transform its interiors.
The designers have dressed their assigned bedrooms and living spaces with varied interpretations of South Florida style, channeling beach-house-casual with a dash (or in some instances, a heap) of Palm Beach pizzazz…
